Distribution Network Operators

Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) were key partners in the Rural Energy Resilience project, helping to explore how vehicle-to-grid (V2X) technology can support a more flexible, resilient electricity network in rural areas. Working with operators including Electricity North West and UK Power Networks, the project tested how electric vehicles and community charge points could act as local energy assets rather than just sources of demand.

For DNOs, V2X offers a new form of energy flexibility. By enabling electricity to be stored in vehicle batteries and released back to buildings or the grid when needed, V2X can help reduce pressure on constrained rural networks, support grid balancing, and provide backup power during outages. Importantly, DNO engagement highlighted that this flexibility can also improve safety, reducing the need for engineers to carry out urgent repairs during severe weather events when conditions can be dangerous.

The project also provided DNOs with valuable real-world data on charging behaviour, plug-in duration, solar integration and potential energy export. These insights help inform future network planning and demonstrate how small, community-scale assets such as car clubs and village halls can contribute to national resilience. The RER project showed that closer collaboration between DNOs, communities and local authorities is essential to unlocking the full potential of V2X and ensuring rural areas play an active role in the transition to a smarter, more resilient energy system.
