Trials
The Rural Energy Resilience (RER) project set out with a bold ambition: to understand how Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technology can strengthen energy security, reduce costs, and empower rural communities.
Over 18 months, we delivered 52 real-world trials across village halls, community hubs, car clubs and rural venues, proving that V2X can deliver meaningful, measurable value where it is needed most.
What We Achieved
High User Confidence & Satisfaction
Participants were enthusiastic about the technology, consistently reporting positive experiences and strong interest in using V2X again in the future.
Reliable V2X Performance Across Rural Sites
Trials successfully demonstrated:
-
Vehicle-to-Building (V2B) for reducing energy costs
-
Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) for exporting stored energy during peak demand
-
Island Mode for powering community buildings during outages
-
Solar-integrated charging, enabling fully renewable energy cycles
These outcomes confirm the potential for V2X to support everyday energy needs and provide backup power during emergencies.
Broad Vehicle Compatibility
A wide range of electric vehicles were tested, with many successfully delivering charge, building support, and grid export. This shows a growing readiness across the EV market for future V2X services.
